Man pleads guilty of leaving dead snake in ex-wife’s driveway

A Lansford man with a history of making threats against judges, police, his ex-wife and attorneys entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Wednesday afternoon in two pending cases.

John Robert Large, 54, who listed his address as 26 Jones St., pleaded guilty but mentally ill to one count each of stalking, terroristic threats and harassment in one case and he pleaded to another count of terroristic threats in a second case.

Large, who has been in custody since 2016, entered his pleas before Senior Judge Dudley N. Anderson, specially presiding from Lycoming County. Anderson is one of several senior judges who has heard criminal cases against Large in recent years as the county’s three sitting judges recused themselves from his cases after he threatened the life of the late Carbon Judge David W. Addy.

On June 12, 2016, Large threatened his ex-wife and her parents. He is charged with leaving a dead snake and crow on her property with threatening notes. He pleaded to terroristic threats for that incident with charges of harassment, and not having permits from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Pennsylvania Game Commission.

On June 13, 2016, Large threatened Lehighton state police with a reference to the Orlando, Florida, attack in which a gunman entered a night club and opened fire, killing 49.

Also, Large called in a bomb threat to both the home and office of Palmerton attorney Gerald Strubinger Jr. According to court records, Strubinger represented Large’s ex-wife in a custody hearing.

In that case he pleaded to the stalking, threats and harassment charges. Charges of terrorism, another count of terroristic threats and harassment were dropped.

Large fled the area and was apprehended in Vermont where he got into more trouble for threatening a judge in that state and had to be removed from a Vermont courtroom because of his unruly behavior. He was eventually extradited to Pennsylvania to face the new charges.

Assistant District Attorney Michael S. Greek and Attorney Michael P. Gough, who was appointed to represent Large, entered into evidence a transcript of a plea hearing held in Lehigh County where the presiding judge ruled that Large committed his crimes in that county at a time when he was mentally ill.

Also submitted was a psychological report prepared by a psychiatrist as ordered by the court.

Large appeared calm during the proceeding, stating, “I take responsibility for my actions.”

He also answered any questions posed by Anderson with “yes” and “no” responses.

Gough also said he spent the morning at the county prison with Large going over his plea agreement and answering any questions Large had. After the proceeding Large was returned to the county prison.

Anderson accepted the pleas but deferred sentencing, stating he did not have all the information concerning the psychological report and the sentencing proceeding in Lehigh County, which he wants to thoroughly review. He also ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report which will include any information from the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Mental Health-Developmental Services. He said he wanted a representative of that organization present at Large’s sentencing.

Anderson set sentencing for 10 a.m. on Jan. 18, 2019.
