Carbon County plans to replace 800 feet of fence on Route 209

Carbon County plans to replace a fence along the sidewalk leading to the new bridge on Route 209.

A proposal was received The Service Team, Lehighton, to replace the 800 feet of fence for $7,600.

“It’s going to be a great project,” said Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard.

He said the project will replace the fence from the old bridge to the Subway sandwich shop.

“The fence color will change from green to black. They’re going to be replacing 14 of the terminal posts,” among other improvements, he said.

“It’s a lot of money, but it’s a great investment,” and will improve public safety, Gerhard said.

The project will start Oct. 1 and be done in four days, he said.

From there, commissioners want to make other improvements.

“We want to get that sidewalk fixed up, too. That’s the next step,” said Commissioner William J. O’Gurek.

In other matters, commissioners approved three items related to the county prison.

They were an agreement with Carbon Career and Technical Institute to provide GED services for inmates age 21 and older from Sept. 1 through June 30, 2019, at no cost to the county; an agreement with the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug & Alcohol Commission to provide treatment counseling for inmates in 2019, with the $54,000 cost to be paid through commissary funds; and an agreement with Penn Medical group to provide medical services for two years beginning Oct. 1 at $53,000 per year.

Commissioners also signed off on an agreement between the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Northeast Pennsylvania Counter Terrorism Task Force for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The award is $994,639.

The Task Force covers Carbon, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Susquehanna and Wayne counties.
