Local Sports Roundup: Results from Sept. 18

Five area volleyball teams earned victories on Tuesday.

Wins were recorded by Northwestern, Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley, Pleasant Valley, and Marian.

VOLLEYBALL

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Jim Thorpe knocked off Tamaqua for a 25-8, 25-17, 25-9 Schuylkill League victory.

Brandy Montemuro led the Olympians with seven kills, five assists and four digs, while Autumn Snyder finished with seven digs, four kills and two blocks. Kelsey Carroll had 17 assists, seven digs, and six aces and Abbey McGinley chipped in 10 digs.

Ella McLaughlin paced the Raiders with 18 digs, while Brynn Gigli followed with four assists and two kills.

Panther Valley-Lehighton

Panther Valley defeated Lehighton for a 25-7, 25-18, 25-19 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Erika Dubosky paced the Panthers with 10 kills, eight digs and four aces, while Olivia Dacey chipped in with 14 digs, three kills and three aces. Emily Kwaak (nine kills, four digs), Rachelle Filer (six kills, six blocks, four digs), Sarah Zabroski (four kills, 14 assists) and Jenna Dubosky (15 assists) played their part in the win.

Alyssa Frey led the Indians with 10 assists and five aces, while Lillian Brown followed with 16 digs and two kills. Samantha Banning chipped in with 17 digs.

Pine Grove-Marian

Marian earned a 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.

Tatianna Zeleniak led the Fillies with 27 assists and nine digs, while Macie Mazaluski chipped in with 12 kills and four aces.

Alivia Karchner had nine kills and Jamison Wheeler had seven, while Antonina Zeleniak had 10 digs.

Palmerton-Northwestern

Northwestern knocked off Palmerton for a 25-14, 25-13, 25-13 Colonial League victory.

Ashley Bennicoff paced the Tigers with nine assists and three aces, while Sam McGinley followed with five kills, two blocks and two assists.

Stroudsburg-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley remained unbeaten with a 26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Stroudsburg.

Cameron Caffrey led the Bears’ offense with 28 assists, 17 digs and two kills, while Desi Powell added 15 kills and 15 digs.

Desi Beade contributed 18 digs.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-ES North

Lehighton cruised to a 9-1 non-league victory over East Stroudsburg North.

Alison Miller scored twice to lead Lehighton. Makenzie Hoats and Brooke Schleicher each added a goal and an assist.

Gabriella Szozda and Aleah Nothstein both chipped in scores, while Kara Slaw contributed an assist.

BOYS SOCCER

Bangor-Palmerton

Corlan Wood’s penalty kick lifted Palmerton to a 3-2 Colonial League victory over Bangor.

Josh Long and Johnny Perloni added the other Bomber goals, while Bryce Yacone was credited with an assist.

Yacone, the Bombers’ keeper, grabbed 11 saves.

Gabe Lawler scored the Slaters’ two goals.

Salisbury-Northern Lehigh

Salisbury cruised to a 5-0 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Jim Thorpe defeated Pottsville, 4-1.

Leanne Van Essendelft rebounded from a first-set loss to post a singles win for the Olympians. Christy McLean and Kaitlyn O’Neil also rolled to victories.

Jim Thorpe improves to 10-1 on the season.

The Raiders’ Colin Krieg and Nate Shellhamer tied for medalist honors with an 86.

Noah Fredericks shot a team- low 92 for the Crimson Tide.

Pleasant Valley hosted a six-team Eastern Pennsylvania Conference cross country meet on Tuesday.

The PV girls and boys both finished 1-2.

Allentown Central Catholic’s Sydney Harris won the girls race with a time of 19:50. Pleasant Valley’s Juliana Lopez finished sixth.

On the boys side, it was Jacob Brown of Emmaus who won with a time of 18:00. Pleasant Valley’s Evan Fisher-Perez finished sixth, while Nathan Borger came in 18th.
