Summit Hill tables school police officer proposal

Summit Hill Borough Council tabled a proposal Monday to have a police officer provide full-time services to the Panther Valley School District.

Council members said they need more information on the financial aspects of the proposal.

Council unanimously agreed to have the proposal reviewed by its solicitor attorney Michael Greek, for his recommendations.

Council President Michael Kokinda said, “We have things to review.”

Kokinda said wages, vacation, benefits and pension must be addressed to make sure the borough “isn’t eating any of the costs.”

Council has received a written proposal from the district.

Councilman David Wargo saying, “This is the first time we’re seeing something in writing.”

“There’s just a lot of questions we want Michael Greek to look at,” Councilman Billy O’Gurek Jr. said.

On Thursday, the Panther Valley School Board voted 5-3 to approve a proposal for security services that it said were offered by Summit Hill Police Department.

The decision to add an armed officer comes following a spring semester where the junior-senior high school faced multiple lock downs due to threats and contraband found on school property.

At an April 23 council meeting, Chief of Police Joseph Fittos Jr. encouraged council to look into providing a school resource officer.

The Panther Valley Junior-Senior High School and the Panther Valley Intermediate School are physically located in Summit Hill borough. That’s why the district is working with the Summit Hill Police Department on providing a school resource officer.

At the April meeting, Fittos said the officer would share responsibilities with all the district buildings.

He said that he and officers Jeffrey Ohl and Brian Horos met with school officials on April 12 and discussed the matter.

The school district anticipates a grant will cover the cost of the police protection.

The council’s next scheduled meeting is Aug. 27. To implement the police protection proposal in time for the start of the 2018-19 school year, the council would likely have to hold a special meeting.
