Man flown from fall at Glen

A man from New Jersey died in the Lehigh River in Lehigh Gorge State Park on Friday evening, and emergency crews rescued people in separate incidents from Glen Onoko Falls in the park over the weekend.

Emergency crews recovered the body of the swimmer Saturday morning and were called back to the park just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday for another hiker who fell at the falls.

Jim Thorpe Deputy Fire Chief Vince Yaich said that a young man suffered a head injury after falling around 15 to 20 feet near the second falls.

He was flown from the scene for medical attention.

Fire companies from Jim Thorpe, Lehigh & Lausanne, Lehighton, Nesquehoning and Penn Forest, among others, responded to the rescue call.

Lehighton’s fire police helped direct traffic near the site.

In the incident Friday, the swimmer, whose name has not been released, was reported missing at 5:30 p.m.

The search was called off at 9:30 p.m. Crews had found the body, but couldn’t get to it, Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller said.

Jim Thorpe Fire Department was already nearby from the top of Glen Onoko Falls.

An injured hiker was found conscious and alert.

Water teams from Lehighton, Mahanoy City, Ryan Township and Whitehall were called to the drowning scene.

This is the second drowning this summer in that section of the Lehigh River.

Angel Rivas, 24, of Hazleton, drowned on June 19.
