Two businesses seek medical marijuana licenses in Carbon

Two businesses are seeking licenses to open medical marijuana dispensaries in Carbon County.

The Department of Health released a list of applicants for its second round of medical marijuana licenses on Monday. The state plans to issue new dispensary licenses, with four of them to be located in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Among those listed for the Northeast region are Local Dispensaries LLC and Serenity HealthCare PA LLC, who have applied for separate licenses to be used in Lehighton, Carbon County.

According to the Department of State, Local Dispensaries is registered to a residence in Center Valley, Lehigh County.

The Department of Health said they couldn’t provide specifics about the application until the state has awarded the licenses.

Local Dispensaries has applied to open dispensaries in Harrisburg and Johnstown. They were not part of the initial round of applications last year.

Serenity is registered to a Philadelphia address, and has submitted applications for six different dispensaries in Lancaster, Chester, Philadelphia and Scranton, as well as Mahanoy City.

If approved, the dispensary would be permitted to sell medical marijuana oil, liquids, pills and other products.

The new dispensary licenses were approved as part of the state’s original medical marijuana legislation, but lawmakers decided that licenses would be given out in two phases.

The Northeast region will get four new dispensary licenses in this round. In all, 26 applications are being considered.

There are also two grower-processor licenses which will be given out in the Northeast region.

Applicants must provide a nonrefundable application fee of $5,000 but must have much more than that on hand. They must also put up a $30,000 permit fee, which is refundable if the application is rejected, and prove that they have $150,000 in capital.

Applicants must describe their business, show their ability to prevent abuse or illegal conduct, comply with local zoning, and provide a diversity plan.
