Resident asks county for traffic modifications

A Jim Thorpe man is hoping the Carbon County Commissioners can make some modifications to help with the traffic flow around Jim Thorpe.

Robert Schaninger approached the board on Thursday with five suggestions regarding parking, pedestrians and traffic in general through the town.

“The weekends here are chaotic,” he said.

Schaninger suggested asking PennDOT to create a crosswalk from the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway ticket booth, across Route 209, to the Pocono Biking shop in Hazard Square.

“People walk across the road there anyway so why not put a crosswalk there?” he asked.

He also suggested eliminating the last three county parking spots on Route 209 right before the entrance to the county parking lot and creating a dedicated right turn lane into the lot; as well as making the exit to the lot a right turn only as a way to alleviate congestion going into and out of the parking lot.

In addition, Schaninger suggested that the county vehicles be moved to another location to provide more spaces on weekends; and finally asked that the commissioners urge PennDOT to install a light at the Route 903 and Front Street intersection on the east side of the borough because it is a bad intersection and has been the site of several near misses.

“They will say they did a study and there is only 5,000 cars that come down that hill (toward the Route 903 bridge) and it doesn’t warrant it (a light) but when it’s their kid who gets killed because they’re too stupid to put up a light, well maybe they’ll think twice about it.”

The board thanked Schaninger for the suggestions and said that those are issues that should be addressed.

“You gave us reasons to revisit them,” Commissioner William O’Gurek said.

The commissioners said that they will have further discussion on the matter in the near future.
