A Carbon County man admitted fleeing police and leading them on a chase on Monday in the county court.

He was one of seven defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Mahoning incident

Johnathan Robert Exner

, 27, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of fleeing or attempting to elude police, as a felony three. In exchange for the plea 19 other counts filed against him were dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office.

Exner was charged for an incident on April 17, 2017, in Mahoning Township. Township police observed Exner failing to stop for a stop sign along Center Street. He refused to stop and led police on a high-speed chase, during which police said he failed to stop for several other stop signs, almost hit a pedestrian and went the wrong way on a one-way street. He crashed his vehicle in a ditch and fled on foot but was eventually apprehended.

At the time he had several active warrants for his arrest out of Luzerne County.

Exner is currently an inmate in the county prison.

Serfass deferred sentencing to a later date.

Drug cases

Alyssa M. McCarroll

, 29, of Tamaqua, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on April 3, 2017, following a vehicle stop in the 400 block of North Street by Jim Thorpe police. She was a passenger in the vehicle and found with the drug paraphernalia.

She was placed on probation for a year and ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment and render 50 hours of community service.

Erik J. Wurst Jr.

, 32, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia with a charge of possession of a controlled substance dropped in a plea bargain. He was arrested on Oct. 17, 2017, by state police at Fern Ridge along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township.

He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.

Scott Russell Schulte

, 29, of Mechanicsburg, Dauphin County, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on July 11, 2016, by Jim Thorpe police following a traffic stop along Broadway.

In exchange for the plea, a case involving charges of criminal trespass and related counts were dropped.

It was noted Schulte successfully completed a long-term inpatient drug rehabilitation program run by the Salvation Army in Harrisburg. After completing the program, Schulte relocated to the Harrisburg area where he is currently employed.

Serfass sentenced him to time-served (55 days) to one year in jail and ordered he get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.

Alyssa Marie Magee

, 22, of Tannersville, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia with a charge of possession of a controlled substance dropped in a plea bargain. She was arrested on March 6, 2015, along North Shore Drive in Penn Forest Township by state police, after a search warrant was served at a residence. She was previously placed in the county’s Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked from it for violating conditions.

Serfass placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.

Elijah Aziz

, 23, of Slatington, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia with a charge of possession of a controlled substance dropped in a plea bargain. He was arrested on Oct. 24, 2017, by Lehighton police in a residence along North Second Street. Aziz is currently an inmate in the Lehigh County prison facing a probation violation proceeding.

He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.

Shaun Austin Mann

, 23, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia with a charge of possession of a controlled substance dropped in a plea bargain. He was arrested on July 14, 2016, by Lehighton police following a traffic stop along Route 443. He was a passenger in the vehicle.

Sentencing was deferred. He is currently an inmate in the county prison facing a probation violation proceeding.

Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
