Northeast MS social media threat investigated

On the evening of March 8, 2017, the Bethlehem Police Department and Bethlehem Area School District was made aware of some additional threatening language posted on a social media site. The language posted referenced Tuesday’s incident which concerned a threat against Northeast MS.

Bethlehem Police Detectives, School Resource Officers and Bethlehem School District Personnel are presently conducting an investigation into the source of this new social media post and also Tuesday’s social media posts. This morning, when students came to school, there were extra police patrols at the school as a precaution.

Through investigation, Detectives were able to track the threatening posts to a residence in another state and several juveniles, ages 10-12 years old. At this point in the investigation, we believe that these posted threats were meant to disrupt school operations and are not potentially credible. As in every case of threats, as a precaution and to ease parent’s stress, police patrols will be around the school throughout the day. The SRO Officer at the school, SRO Officer Sam Elias, is aware of the investigation and is speaking with staff and students.

The Bethlehem Police Department and the BASD take all potential threats of any type against any school or student or staff member very seriously. The safety of your children and our schools are our first priority.

Any individual, either juvenile or adult in age, who makes or posts a potential threat of any type against any BASD school will be identified and criminal charges filed accordingly.

Anyone having any information relative to this incident or any other incident involving a BASD School, please contact Bethlehem Police Detectives at 610-865-7187.

There is no additional information to be released at this time.
