Fight breaks out after Panther Valley/Marian basketball game

An investigation is underway after a fight broke out following a District 11 Class 2A semifinal boys basketball game Tuesday night in Pottsville.

Pottsville police and surrounding police agencies were dispatched to Martz Hall, 1541 Laurel Boulevard, to investigate a fight in the stands involving several spectators at the Panther Valley/Marian boys playoff basketball game.

Police said school security broke up the fight, and police assisted on-site personnel with clearing the facility and preliminarily identifying the people involved in the altercation.

Pottsville police said the investigation continues, and appropriate charges will be filed after all available evidence is collected and reviewed.

Due to the incident, a meeting involving the athletic directors from both schools and representatives of District 11 was scheduled to take place this morning at Tamaqua Area High School.

Marian Athletic Director Stan Dakosty said the matter is under investigation and he has no comment. Panther Valley Athletic Director Kristin Black was not available for comment at press time.

Panther Valley won the contest 52-49 to advance to the District 11 Class 2A championship game against Moravian Academy at 6 p.m. Friday at Freedom High School.
