Summit Hill plans improvements for Ginder Field

Major improvements are planned for the Ginder Field in Summit Hill this summer.

The field, once a football stadium when Summit Hill had its own high school, now has a playground, a pavilion and is used for Little League Baseball practice.

On Monday, Summit Hill Borough Council awarded a contract totaling $108,900 for handicapped parking facilities, walkways, bathroom reconstruction, a kitchenette and new playground equipment.

Awarded the bid for the rehabilitation project was a hometown company, Stoney Lonesome Excavating and Paving, which was one of three bidders for the work. Stoney Lonesome submitted the lowest bid.

Other bidders were Bruce George Paving and Excavating of Kunkletown, $126,466.06, and C. E. Ankiewicz Construction and Excavation, Mountaintop, $163,364.16.

The funds for the project are made available through government grants.

Jodi McAndrew, president of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission, which is in charge of the project, said an additional phase to the project will be occurring with Community Development Block Grant Funds. She said this includes a playground kitchenette and an entryway at the north end of the field. She said she hopes this phase of the work also will occur this year.

McAndrew was pleased to see the project finally occurring. It had been in the planning phase for several years.

“We’re very excited that we’re finally going to start this project,” McAndrew said on behalf of the commission. “Thank you to everyone for all the support we’ve received.”

In another matter pertaining to the Recreation Commission, the council approved a resolution allowing for seven junior Recreation Commission positions.

To be a junior member, youngsters must reside in Summit Hill borough and apply to be appointed.

McAndrew said the seven members are expected to be named later this month. She said they will assist at an Easter on the Hill program at 1 p.m. March 24 at Ludlow Park.

The concept of Easter on the Hill was initially proposed by McAndrew’s 11-year-old daughter several months ago.

McAndrew said seven youngsters have indicated they would like to become junior members of the commission.

In one other matter, the Recreation Commission said it will hold its annual Stay at Home 5K run on May 27.
