Carbon woman given state prison term for drug dealing

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a state prison term on Friday after pleading guilty to a drug-dealing charge.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Heather Rex, 32, of Lehighton, to serve 27 to 50 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, methamphetamine.

She also pleaded to a charge of false identification to law enforcement and was sentenced to serve four to 12 months in a state prison, concurrent with the first count.

Rex was arrested on the possession with intent count on Dec. 12, 2017, after she sold meth to a confidential informant working for the Lehighton police. The sale occurred at an address along Iron Street. The false ID count occurred on Sept. 8, 2017, following a vehicle stop by Lehighton police in the 100 block of Iron Street. Rex was a passenger in the vehicle and gave a false name to police.

Rex admitted to a long-term drug addiction problem.

She told the court, “I need help and I can get it in the state system.”

In addition to the jail term, Serfass ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000, render 200 hours of community service when release on parole and was made eligible to apply for the state boot camp program.

Rex, who is an inmate in the county prison, was given credit for 46 days already served.
