Palmerton Girl Scouts collect food for pantry

If you happen to swing by Country Harvest this weekend to pick up some snacks for the game, make sure you pitch in and help out the Girl Scouts with their annual Souperbowl.

“We’re here collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for the food bank in town,” Troop leader Tammy Stetler said.

Different Troops from Service Unit 728 will be manning the donation station at the entrance to the Palmerton store from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The final batch of contributions will be dropped off to St. John’s Lutheran Church on Fireline Road on Monday.

Stetler said that having the girls help out with soliciting donations gives them a sense of charity in their own community, an important tenet of the Girl Scout .

“For them, it’s understanding helping people who are in need. They collect these things, and then they go up to the food bank to see where the food is going, and the people who need it. Just to help their community, and to help other people, they need to learn that,” Stetler said.

Troop 301 Girl Scouts Ashley Stetler, 11, and Kaysee Bartholomew, 10, were happy to lend a hand, greeting each and every customer with a smile and a small piece of paper describing their effort.

“We give them one of these papers right here, and tell them that we’re collecting canned goods for the food bank,” Stetler said. “I’d like to get to 800 cans in a day. That would be great.”

And it seems like their hard work is paying off, as the girls brought in almost 100 canned and boxed goods over the course of two hours on the job on Friday afternoon.

“It’s nice to help people, because some people don’t have homes. And it’s hard for them to live, and they need help,” Bartholomew said.
