Danville man caught with drugs

A Danville man was arrested by Tamaqua police after a traffic stop on Jan. 25.

An officer was monitoring traffic at 1:41 a.m. when the license plate reader detected an expired plate on a passing Chevrolet Malibu. The officer activated the lights and sirens but the driver refused to pull over, The car and cruiser continued heading north on Route 309, continuing through Rush Township at a normal speed. Even when the officer pulled abreast of the Malibu, the other driver ignored him.

The driver, later identified as Rico Juan Cordero, 23, finally pulled the car to a stop when he saw a state trooper waiting at the Humboldt exit of Interstate 81.

As officers approached the car a trooper saw a white bag filled with white powder on Cordero’s lap. A bag of green vegetable matter was found on the front passenger side floor. The powder, weighing in at approximately 30 grams, tested positive as cocaine. The green leafy matter, positively identified as marijuana, weighed close to 122 grams.

Cordero was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, fleeing, driving without insurance, driving with a suspended license and driving an unregistered vehicle.

He was arraigned before District Magisterial Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, who set bail at $50,000 percentage.

Cordero was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville, posting bail on Jan. 26.
