Eldred man charged in shotgun attack, victim

Police have charged the man accused in Sunday’s shooting in Eldred Township Monroe County.

Alan Dunlap, 49, was arraigned Monday morning in connection with a shooting that occurred at 3:50 p.m. outside his home at 202 Gannon Lane.

Two women were also been charged in connection with the incident.

According to court documents, Dunlap shot the victim in the leg after he came to the home with Dunlap’s ex-girlfriend to retrieve her belongings. The ex-girlfriend told police Dunlap had kicked her out of the house on Friday.

State troopers from Lehighton said Dunlap, who is legally prohibited from possessing firearms, told them that he shot the victim, 42-year-old Robert Purdy, because he was afraid of him.

Several neighbors witnessed the shooting take place and called police.

The ex-girlfriend told police that she and Purdy had just arrived and gotten out of their vehicle when the shooting occurred.

She said that when they arrived, Dunlap ran to his front porch where another woman, identified as 33-year-old Kristel Wheaton, gave him a shotgun. Dunlap then allegedly shot at Purdy with the weapon two times while Purdy was unarmed and had his hands in the air. The second shot reportedly struck him in the leg.

After the shooting, Purdy fled the scene in the vehicle he arrived in, an orange Ford Explorer. The ex-girlfriend, identified as 32-year-old Heather Grove, then jumped into a car belonging to Wheaton, which police said she did not have permission to use. She was later charged with theft.

Police detained Dunlap and Wheaton less than two hours after the shooting occurred.

Wheaton initially denied knowledge of the shooting, but then admitted Dunlap asked her to get a gun and she retrieved a long gun from beside his bed, according to police. She reportedly said she was aware that Dunlap was prohibited from possessing firearms.

Wheaton allegedly told police that she did not see the shooting occur, but she heard the gun go off.

Dunlap initially denied involvement in a shooting, but eventually admitted to shooting a .410 shotgun two times in Purdy’s direction, police said. He allegedly told police he did not attempt to render aid, and hid the shotgun under his neighbor’s porch.

Police got permission from the neighbor and recovered a double-barreled .410 shotgun from underneath the porch of the neighbor’s home. Two spent shells were in the chambers.

The weapon will be sent to a crime laboratory for testing.

Dunlap was charged with two counts aggravated assault, illegal possession of a firearm receiving stolen property, all felonies; as well as assault, reckless endangerment, and tampering with evidence.

He is currently incarcerated at Monroe County Correctional Facility, with bail set at $50,000.

Wheaton also faces a weapons charge for giving a gun to someone prohibited from possessing weapons. She was released on unsecured bail.

Grove, the ex-girlfriend, was charged with theft and jailed with bail set at $5,000. She is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 9.
