Ryan Navitsky, a worker with Dave Frederick Contractor and Builder, New Ringgold, works 40 feet above West Broad Street to remove iconic, 156-year-old quatrefoil embellishments from the bell tower of St. John XXIII Parish in Tamaqua on Friday. It was feared the rotted wood posed a threat to those walking beneath the spire. The contractor volunteered to perform the work in the interest of public safety. The house of worship was known as the Church of St. Jerome for more than 150 years before a name change four years ago. DONALD R. SERFASS/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
