Special session to share information on adoption, foster care, with focus on medically fragile children

Diakon Adoption & Foster Care will hold an informational session on providing foster care to children and youths, with a special focus on children with medically fragile conditions, at 7 p.m. Nov. 29 at Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church, 3441 Devonshire Road in Allentown.

“We recently created this special focus because of the pressing need for foster care for children and youths identified as being medically fragile,” says Joyce Riche, director of Diakon Adoption & Foster Care in northeastern Pennsylvania.

These children and teens, she adds, range in age from infancy through 21, may have been born with moderate to severe medical issues or may have developed medical concerns as a result of abuse or neglect. “They need varying levels of care based on their specific medical needs,” she notes.

The goal is to allow the children to transition from an institutional placement to a home environment or to prevent institutional placement altogether. The session also will include information on adoption and foster care of other children and teens.

People interested in attending the session are asked to call, toll-free, 888-582-2230 or 610-682-1504 to register.

The session is funded by a mini-grant from Pennsylvania’s Statewide Adoption & Permanency Network as part of National Adoption Month.
