Weatherly adds site to Game Commission's Safety Zone

Hunters could soon bag a buck in a remote, wooded area of Weatherly Borough.

Borough council has agreed to sign up a borough-owned property in the Game Commission's Safety Zone program, which would impose a lot of the restrictions seen on state game lands."I've read up on it and it seems like it's very beneficial. I don't hunt, but I have a lot of friends who do and I respect them," Mayor Tom Connors said. The land is in the northwest corner of the borough, bisected by the Hazle Creek. Officials could not say how large the property is Monday night.Under the safety zone program, state game land regulations would apply. Motorized vehicles would be banned, and there would be no alcohol, drugs or overnight camping. The borough can also use the resources of the state game commission. Wildlife conservation officers will patrol the land, and the commission's regional forester, game lands workers and seed tree program would be available to the borough.General hunting rules will apply. Hunters must observe a 25-yard buffer from any road.Wildlife Conservation Officer Cory Bentzoni addressed borough council Monday night. He said the property across Buck Mountain Road was enrolled last year."Probably in the vicinity of 25 citations, I've written for people riding ATVs, camping, doing things they aren't supposed to do, with help from the (Weatherly) police department," he said. The most noticeable change that residents will see is "posted" signs around the property, informing them of the new regulations.Connors said that both sides can cancel the agreement at any time.Councilman Joseph Cyburt recalled having an issue with ATV riders being disruptive during the most recent Weatherly Hillclimb."Maybe if we do something like this, it would chase people away," he said.
