Woman facing DUI, child endangerment charges

A Lansford woman faces multiple charges, including driving while under the influence and endangering the welfare of two young children after she was driving erratically in Nesquehoning.

Cherie Esther Reiss, 26, of Leisenring Street, was recently charged by Nesquehoning police with multiple vehicle violations, as well as two counts of DUI and one count each of endangering the welfare of children, careless driving and reckless driving.The incident happened on April 26, the affidavit states.Officers Robert Blisard and Richard Neikam were dispatched for a report of an erratic driver coming into Nesquehoning on Route 209 from Jim Thorpe, swerving all over the roadway. The driver of the vehicle was also driving slower than the posted speed.Police found the vehicle and observed it turn into the McDonald's parking lot through the exit.Officers saw the driver, later identified as Reiss, had two young children, ages 1 and 2, in car seats in the rear of the vehicle.They approached the vehicle to speak with Reiss and noticed signs of substance use, including the smell of marijuana. Reiss said that she had missed the entrance and was just stopping to pick up food for her boyfriend after she picked up her children on her way home.When asked about the signs of intoxication she was exhibiting, Reiss said that she was up for a long time but didn't take anything recently, admitting that she had smoked marijuana the night before. Reiss failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. The children were released into their father's custody.During an interview at the police station, Reiss admitted that she had used a bag of heroin earlier that day when she was at a friend's house in Brodheadsville and was driving 15 mph under the speed limit because she knew she shouldn't be driving.Reiss said that she relapsed and wanted to get help for her addiction problem. She was taken for a blood test before being released.Carbon County Office of Children and Youth Services was also notified about the incident.Reiss faces a preliminary hearing before Magisterial Judge Casimir Kosciolek on Wednesday.
