Raiders roll by Miners

MINERSVILLE - Before the season, Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner said that he wants his best 11 athletes on the field at the same time.

And during the Raiders' 2017 season opener at Minersville, the Tamaqua coach found ways to get all of his playmakers the ball.Tamaqua showcased a bevy of offensive weapons behind a dominant effort from its offensive line during a 42-0 rout of Minersville on Friday night."We just have to come out as a team," said Tamaqua tailback Nick Breiner. "We have to score and not take anyone for granted. You always have to play your game."Our guys up front, we've been doing it all offseason. The weight room is a big thing there. They just push - they're good."Breiner bullied his way for two touchdowns (7, 34) over the first 15 minutes of play. His bruising 34-yard score with 7:46 left in the second quarter featured breaking three arm tackles, and running directly over a fourth Miners' defender. The junior tallied 118 of his 127 yards in the first half."He was running like a beast in the first half," Bonner said of Breiner. "He was cramping up in the second and didn't see as much time. But it's no problem when you go to Nate Boyle, he runs hard. Jake Barron in front of those two guys really helps out too."With 1:22 left before intermission, Brayden Knoblauch, who didn't start the game, threw a beautiful 19-yard over-the-shoulder touch pass to Breiner for an impressive touchdown in the corner of the end zone on fourth down. This time, Breiner was flanked out at receiver."If you're rotating quarterbacks, it usually means you don't have one good one," Bonner said. "But we're in a fortunate situation, I think we have two really good kids there. It's obviously a tough choice to make. Right now, I think both kids click."We don't really seem to miss a beat right now no matter who's in."The two-quarterback system did no wrong during Friday's win, as starting senior Thad Zuber also looked in sync with the offense. He hooked up with the team's active-leading receiver, Casey Rother, on a beautiful play-action fake for a 19-yard score in the third frame to make it 28-0. Rother, the massive target at 6-2, 202, hauled in five catches for 85 yards."I know he gets down on himself once in a while," Bonner said. "He missed one or two catches, but he definitely makes up for it on both sides of the ball ... He brings it on defense too. He's a good, hard nosed kid."I know he is a big baseball player and probably has a bright future in baseball, but he probably could have one in football too if he wanted."Breiner scored his fourth touchdown early in the fourth, and then Boyle slammed the door on the Miners at the 5:02 mark of the final quarter with a two-yard plunge.THE DEFENSE ... Mitchell Kurek made a sliding interception in the first half when Minersville quarterback Scott Schwalm was under pressure. Nate Boyle led the Raiders in interceptions last season, and he looked the continue that trend with his first of the season on Friday. "I think defensively, our two defensive tackles Matt Amodea and Bronson Strouse are two hard, physical kids," Bonner said. "They're not the biggest kids, but they have good hips and they move well. I thought John Burns and Breiner played really tough on the inside. And you know we have good kids coming up and making great plays on the outside. I thought Rother had a good game defensively too."THE OFFENSE ... Boyle and Breiner both split out as receivers at times, as did Knoblauch and Zuber. Knoblauch also was the Raiders' punt returner.2QB SYSTEM ... Zuber and Knoblauch posted nearly identical stat lines, combining for 131 yards and two scores.FACEBOOK ...
