Police: Boy pulled from lake doing well

An unresponsive 9-year-old Allentown boy, who was pulled from Mauch Chunk Lake Saturday, remains in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, but according to a follow-up with the Jim Thorpe Police Department, he is doing well.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was snorkeling at Mauch Chunk Lake Park at the time. When he went under water and didn't resurface, the Jim Thorpe Police Department and Lehighton ambulance were dispatched.According to police, people on the beach immediately began to search for him. He was located approximately five minutes after the search began. A nurse, who was on the beach at the time, began CPR.Park Director Dave Horvath said there was a large staff on duty at the time, including two park rangers, who all had extensive rescue background, and there were also visitors to the park with a medical background. In addition to the nurse, Horvath said a doctor was also on scene."The boy was under water for several minutes before he was brought to the shoreline," Horvath said. "He wasn't breathing on his own. They were able to establish a heartbeat and pulse. He still wasn't able to breathe on his own. They flew him out in critical condition."Horvath, who wasn't on duty Saturday, but went to the park when he was advised of the incident, said he felt very comfortable with the way the staff had everything under control."I can't quite thank all the people who helped with the recovery of the boy and with the rescue. We were fortunate to have others at the beach that day with training and medical experience. I don't have names. There were quite a few others who jumped into action. The park staff did a fantastic job controlling the situation. Our staff handled it very, very professionally that day."Horvath also said that according to an unconfirmed report, he's been told that the boy is in critical condition, but is showing signs of improvement."It was an unfortunate accident. He was there with his family and they were together when it happened. It was a concerted effort between visitors and park staff to institute recovery efforts to locate the boy as quickly as possible."
