Carbon County court - drug charges

A total of seven defendants in pending drug-related cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Tuesday.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted the pleas from the following:Three countsJeremy D. Knappenberger, 38, of Jim Thorpe, entered guilty plea to one count of possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia in three separate cases.Knappenberger was charged with the possession of a controlled substance charge on Feb. 12, 2014, by state police at Lehighton following a traffic stop along Mahoning Mountain Drive East in Mahoning Township. The two paraphernalia counts occurred on May 4, 2016, at the intersection of West Second and Center streets by Jim Thorpe police; and on Oct. 17, 2014, along Route 93 filed by Nesquehoning police following a traffic stop. In that case he was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked from it for violating conditions.Matika placed him on probation for a year on each count for a total of two years and ordered him to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render a total of 100 hours of community service.Other pleasIshmil Waheed Harris, 34, of Williamsport, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on April 15, 2015, along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township following a traffic stop. He was a passenger in the vehicle and heroin was found. More serious charges, including possession with intent to deliver, were dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney's office.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered him to render 50 hours of community service, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.Harris is currently an inmate at the state correctional institution at Mahanoy - Schuylkill County, where he is serving a prison term on other drug charges.Charles Lewis Thatcher VII, 21, of Tamaqua, formerly of Coaldale, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance.He was arrested on Nov. 18, 2016, by Nesquehoning police at the intersection of North Mermon Avenue and Mill Street. The police report said crystal methamphetamine and diazepam was found. Police initially responded to a report of a suspicious male in the area.Sentencing was deferred because Thatcher, who is currently an inmate in the county prison, has other pending criminal cases.Taryn Lee Depos, 31, of Tamaqua, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on Oct. 27, 2016, by Summit Hill police following a traffic stop. She was a passenger in the vehicle.Sentencing was deferred as she faces a probation violation proceeding in Northampton County, where she is an inmate in the county prison.Stephanie Michele Forrester, 26, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on Nov. 7, 2016, by Lansford police in the area of 24 W. Ridge St., Apartment 1. Police responded to a drug overdose report. On scene police found that Forrester had overdosed on drugs. While on scene officers found various drug paraphernalia in the apartment. Also in the apartment were three children; one was Forrester's and the other two she was baby-sitting. In a plea bargain, a charge of endangering the welfare of children was dropped and the charge he pleaded to was added to the criminal complaint.She told Matika she had been drug-free since the incident.Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to render 50 hours of community service and get a drug and alcohol evaluation.Steven David Holtzer, 24, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Feb. 22, 2016, by Mahoning Township police in the parking lot at the Walmart store. Police initially responded to a retail theft report and during a vehicle stop in connection with the theft, Holtzer was a passenger in the vehicle and was found with the paraphernalia.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered him to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render 50 hours of community service.Chad A. Muniz, 40, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on May 2, 2014, by Nesquehoning police along East Cataswissa Street when police responded to a property dispute. Previously he pleaded to three summary offenses for an incident on Feb. 25, 2014, also filed by Nesquehoning police for an incident along Catawissa Street.On the drug count he was placed on probation for six months and ordered to render 25 hours of community service and get a drug and alcohol evaluation. On the summary offenses related to the prior guilty plea he was fined a total of $250 and costs.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee.
