East Penn close to completing road repair

East Penn Township is close to completing road repair work in the area.

Board Supervisor Steven Heckman, updated the rest of the board along with residents on the status of ongoing projects Monday night."The crew is hammering along," he said."West Bowman Road is without a doubt the finest job done by our team since we got the paver. Our team is working like they've been together for 15 years," Heckman said.Hollow Road has also been completed and the crew is moving along to the third section of Stone Mountain Road for shoulder work and pipe repair. The township will pay close to $13,171 to AMS to tar and chip the road."Stone Mountain maybe finished by August, depending on the weather," Heckman said."We replaced more signs and fixed up the dirt roads and mowed a lot of grass," he said. "We used the wing and then boom mower and finished the entire township."Heckman said Bake Oven Road will be added to the gravel and dirt project list."We have to have the application in by September for these projects," Supervisor Jon Strockoz said."There is some money there," he said, referring to state grants.Heckman told the board Hoffman Road will need drainage work. "There is no pipe there. The runoff is going to Nothstein."Vice Chairman Deanna Cunfer, was absent from the monthly meeting but sent a request list to Chairman William Schwab for future repairs around the township."The walkway for the veterans memorial, repair the office parking lot, trim the trees on West Bowman Road, shoulder work for Troxell and fill the pothole on Blue Mountain Road," Schwab read.Schwab also updated the board on the status of last year's road repair list saying, "Pinewood and Sassafras roads will be finished in September.""They have to do potholes. Another problem is with Germans and Lautner roads. The water is coming from the campground right into people's basement on top of Troxell Road," he said.A list for 2018 road work has started to be compiled with Evergreen, Pinewood and Germans all needing drainage work, Schwab said."I'd like to see it get a face-lift," Heckman said of Lautner Road."We're going to eventually lose that road. It'll cave in. The boiler pipe under the road is rotting from the bottom. On Hoffman Road there's no pipe and the shoulder is just eroding."In addition to road work the board announced it will abandon the township fire tax proposal."We had a meeting with the fire company and we don't think the tax will work out, we are no longer considering it," Schwab said.Another township cleanup day has been scheduled for Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. until noon or 1 p.m. at the municipal building."It'll be the same thing as we did last time. We will get the road crew to help us," Heckman said. The board also announced it will be accepting application proposals for the social hall to either sell, lease or manage the building. Proposals can be sent to the municipal building until 3 p.m. Aug. 31.
