Carbon man gets long state prison term for assault, other counts

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a long state prison term on Monday on charges of aggravated assault, criminal trespass, receiving stolen property and a probation violation.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Shawn Jeffrey Reinhart, 35, of Palmerton to serve a total of 51 to 132 months in a state correctional institution.Defense counsel Attorney Jennifer L. Rapa, of the public defender's office, told the court that her client had "no excuses in this case." She said his actions caused serious injuries to the victim and blamed his problems of drug addiction.She said Reinhart "gradually went from a nuisance in the community to violent behavior."Reinhart, when asked by Serfass if he had anything to say, said, "No, your honor."The victim of the assault in the incidentsaid he suffered serious injuries. He added, "The boy needs help. Somewhere where he can't hurt someone else."State police at Lehighton said Reinhart, who was homeless at the time, entered a garage at 10400 block of Interchange Road, in Towamensing Township on April 14, 2016, and stayed the night.The next morning the property ownerentered the garage and Reinhart struck him on the head with a piece of wood, causing him serious injuries."This is a horrendous crime," Serfass said. He added it could have been worse, noting a report indicated the blow to the head could have resulted in much more serious injuries.On the receiving count, he was arrested by Palmerton police on Jan. 29 at the Rite Aid pharmacy along Delaware Avenue. He was one of four arrested for shoplifting at the store.Serfass imposed 48 to 120 months on the assault count and three to 12 months on the trespass charge with the terms running consecutively. On the receiving charge, he imposed 24 months state probation concurrent with the other counts.Reinhart was also ordered to supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, make total restitution of $1,301.83, pay court costs of about $1,000, no contact with the victim, and when released on parole render 100 hours of community service.Reinhart, who has been in the county prison since his arrest, was given credit for 116 days already served.
