Schuylkill County Fair wraps up tonight

Dairy farmers Ron and Rhonda Daubert have a long history with the Schuylkill County Fair.

When the couple was married, Ron's parents gave them 19 cows. Since then, and for more than 50 years, they have operated Windmill Farm in Pine Grove. They live in the home where Ron was born 84 years ago, and today, the family milks about 200 of the cows, which are Brown Swiss."I'm so proud of our granddaughters, and they've put in hours and hours of practice," said Rhonda Daubert, as their three granddaughters exhibited Brown Swiss cows at the annual Schuylkill County Fair, which began Thursday and runs through today. Her son Dennis, who works the farm with Ron, also showed cows. Two of the granddaughters, Grace and Madeline Daubert, live in Pine Grove; the third, Victoria Feidt, lives in Millersburg."They've been showing since they were youngsters and remember what they learned early: If you don't win, don't hang your head. Hold up your head and be glad of what you have done."The theme of this year's fair is Country Scenes - Blue Ribbon Dreams. County fairs are not only a place for farmers to socialize about challenges and successes, Daubert said; it's a chance for the general public to see the farm products and get an idea of the work that is behind them.A highlight of the fair was the annual livestock sale of market animals, including cattle, swine, rabbits, goats and sheep. The fair's annual livestock sale didn't just break records - it demolished the former record. The existing record, $164,170 was set in 2015; this year's sale brought in $195,490.In addition to contests involving farm products, visitors could enjoy dozens of rides, food vendors, live music, truck and tractor pulls, line dancing and other displays and entertainment.Sorry you missed it? Don't despair, there's time today to experience a slew of events, especially geared toward family fun. Today is Family Fun Day. The fair opens to the public at 11 a.m. The first event, shortly after 11 a.m., is an Antique Tractor Pull. The Schuylkill County Sheriff's Department will help parents enroll children in the ID ME program, and the Lions Clubs of District 14-U will provide free sight screenings for children from 6 months to 6 years old.Rides open at 1 p.m. and are presented by Goodtime Amusements out of Hellertown. You may also bring along your small family pet and compete in the Pocket Pet Contest. Youngsters can compete in the Kids Hay Bale Toss and also scramble for pennies and candy. The afternoon highlight is a Tractor Parade, which makes its way through the fairgrounds. The evening entertainment is: The Mahoney Brothers Present: Juke Box Heroes Live at 7 and Long Live the Beatles at 9 p.m.The fairgrounds are located along Route 895, just a half-mile from the intersection of Routes 183 and 895, in Summit Station.
