Chamber hosts mansion tours to help Special Olympics

The Carbon Chamber and Development have partnered with the Lehigh Valley LGBT Council to raise funds for the Carbon County chapter of the Special Olympics.

The fourth annual Mansion Mixer will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday on Packer Avenue on the properties of the Harry and Asa Packer Mansions. The historic buildings will be open for public tours along with snacks from local eateries for a $5 donation."I think this is a great time for local folks who have never been in the mansions to come up, it's in their backyard and so many people haven't seen them," said the chamber's Executive Director, Marlyn Kissner."It's a great night for people to come out and see the history and beauty of the place. The mansions are a highlight of this area," Kissner said.The Asa Packer Mansion was the home of philanthropist, railroad magnate, and founder of Lehigh University, Asa Packer. Built in 1861 and topped by a red-ribbed tin roof the home was built over a cast iron frame and consists of three stories and 18 rooms. The historic home is under outside renovations.The Harry Packer Mansion is perched atop Packer Hill and will host the evening's cash bar in the Libations Lounge.Blue Mountain Resort and Catering, Bonnie and Clyde, Country Harvest and Macaluso's at the Lantern will be on hand to feed the crowd."They have all donated food for the evening," she said."Last year we split the proceeds between the Dimmick Library and Turn to Us. It's a win-win," she said.The chamber will make a donation to the nonprofit Asa Packer Museum for staying open the extra hours.
