Tamaqua falls to Lehigh in Section 6 9-11 title game

RICHBORO - Lehigh staved off elimination in the Section 6 9-11-year-old Little League Tournament with a walk-off win over Tamaqua on Sunday.

The magic was in the air again Tuesday at William B. Curry Memorial Field.Luke Appleman's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Lehigh to an 8-7 victory and the sectional title in the completion of a game that began on Monday.Tamaqua tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth inning when Brian Hinkle scored from second base on a Cian McLaughlin single. Hinkle drew a one-out walk and advanced to scoring position on a fly out to right field. But Lehigh head coach Mark Ondira knew the game was far from over. And he liked his team's chances."Having home-field advantage, we knew last time we had it we won it on a walk-off," Ondria said of Sunday's game. "We kinda felt like, once they tied it up, we still got a chance."Lehigh's rally in the bottom of the sixth closely resembled Sunday's winning formula, with many of the same ingredients again playing a key role in the outcome.Nick Zumas reached on an error to open the bottom of the sixth, and Jack Evans followed with a walk. Appleman's hit plated Zander Lynn, who was running for Zumas. Lynn also scored the game-winning run Sunday on Evans' sacrifice fly."We knew we had Zander Lynn, with his wheels, on the bench that we could plug him in there," Ondira said. "A passed ball here … or an error, anything could put him in scoring position, and he could tag up, and potentially score."It just worked out. Amazing."A potentially momentum-killing weather delay didn't seem to faze Lehigh, which turned a tie game when play was suspended in the bottom of the second inning into a 6-2 lead after three."It was a tough game," said Tamaqua head coach Trevor Steigerwalt. "We fell behind after that rain-out, and they fought back."I told them, no matter what happens, let's win that inning. Let's win that next inning. And we won the next inning. And we won the next inning."Tamaqua started to chip away with two runs in the top of the fourth when Connor Dillon scored on a fielder's choice and Hinkle delivered an RBI single to plate Mason Ligenza to cut Lehigh's lead to 6-4.Blaise Gigli connected for a one-out single - his third hit of the game - in the top of the fifth inning. Gigli took second base on an errant pickoff throw, and came around to score on an error following Luke Kamant's single to bring Tamaqua within a run before Dillon delivered an RBI single to score Kamant and tie the game at 6-6.Jacob Rivera put Lehigh up 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth when he blasted an 0-2 pitch over the center field fence for a solo home run.Tamaqua threatened after tying the game in the top of the sixth, with runners on the corners. But a fielder's choice at second base ended the inning, and Tamaqua's last scoring opportunity.REMARKABLE RIDE … Steigerwalt praised his players' attitudes as much as he did their ability for contributing to the team's success. "It's been a privilege. To get 13 fine young men like this, who want to come together on a common goal … I can't say enough about them. I can't say enough about the dedication it took, the hard work, the sacrifice. The team's made up of 10 shortstops. They took their role, and they did it to the best of their ability," Steigerwalt said.HOME COOKING … Lehigh Little League will host the state tournament, which begins this Friday.REMEMBER WHEN … Tamaqua beat Lehigh 15-5 in five innings last Thursday in an opening-round game of the tournament.Tamaqua 200 221 - 7 11 3Lehigh 213 011 - 8 9 3Mateyak, Hinkle (2) and Kane; Ondria, Zumas (6) and Diaz Rivera.
