Summit Hill addresses police, other matters

Chief of Police Joseph Fittos Jr. asked the Summit Hill council on Monday to consider offering promotional examinations for police officers for a sergeant position.

The sergeant position has been vacant for a long time, Fittos said.Councilman Bill Chapman, who conducted the meeting in lieu of the absence of both the president and vice president, asked that the matter be tabled until next month.The last sergeant on the police department was Robert MacDonald, who retired a number of years ago.In other business• The council hired Cody Pituch of Jim Thorpe as a part-time police officer. It accepted the resignation of Peter Attich as a part-time officer. Fittos said Attich is seeking employment elsewhere.• Officer Jeffrey Ohl was granted permission to attend a conference on managing narcotics informants. There is no cost to the borough.• Residents of East Fell Street asked council for permission to hold a block party in the 200 block of East Fell Street on September 2 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. They said they would like to have a band and various activities.Chapman suggested they put their request in writing "and outline everything you want to do." He said, "Somebody will get back to you." The council's next meeting is Aug. 28.• Summit Hill Zoning Officer Bill Kirklosky reported he sent notices to five owners of rental properties explaining that inspections of their units was required. He said four of those responded and the fifth property was sold at a sheriff's sale.He said the major problems he has found during inspections are electrical. He said he discovered that it is difficult finding qualified electricians to make the repairs.Anyone knowing of available electricians should get in touch with him or the borough secretary.• Complaints were received about people driving the wrong way on East Fell Street, a one-way street, as well as ATVs driving recklessly in that area. Fittos said he will look into the matter.• There also were complaints received about campers, boats and trailers parked around the various cemeteries in the east end of the town.Fittos said the vehicles are permitted in the area of the cemetery so they aren't parked in front of residences.He said they must have current registration and be moved every 10 days.He said he had three vehicles ticketed and towed because of registration being expired.Secretary-Treasurer Kira Steber said one person who had to attend a funeral complained about the vehicles parked there. Fittos said the borough owns the streets and allows the vehicles to use these areas.• The council denied a request to hold Zumba classes in the community center. The council said the person would be doing it as a profit venture and would have to pay the normal rental cost of the building. Steber said the person can't afford the rental fee and proposed sharing any profits she makes with the borough.
