Northern Valley tops BC to advance

LIMEPORT - in the final inning, Vinny Castrine admittedly was a little apprehensive facing the heart of the Bethlehem Catholic order, especially cleanup hitter Dalton Daddona.

"Their four-hitter is a great hitter," said Castrine. "I was kind of nervous throwing fastballs to him. I didn't want him to hit a ball in the gaps. We were only up by two and they hit the ball really hard."Castrine retired Daddona twice over three innings as well as the middle of the lineup Tuesday to help lead Northern Valley to a 4-2 suspended-game victory in the Connie Mack State Tournament at Limeport Stadium. With the win, Northern Valley will play Thursday at 5 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament, meeting the winner of tonight's South Parkland versus Hatfield-Towamencin game. The right-hander threw the final four innings and allowed just one hit. Castrine walked four batters, but he pitched his way out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth when he fanned Robert Church to end the inning. He recorded the first of his two strikeouts earlier in the inning for the second out."I just tried to focus and throw strikes," said Castrine, who threw a fastball and curve. "I don't go for punchouts. They come to me. I was trying to get calls on the outside corner, but it wasn't happening. I knew I had to keep going with it. My curve ball was working for me."Head coach Erich Kline had Castrine ready to relieve Luke Eitner Monday before the rains came Monday."He has had the lowest ERA all year," said Klein. "He mixes it up and he is having a great tournament. This is a good team, and he kept battling with them."Tuesday's action began in the bottom of the fourth inning with Becahi coming to bat and the game tied 2-2 as a thunderstorm halted play Monday night.Becahi jumped out to a 2-0 lead in second off starter Eitner, who struggled with his control.Northern Valley tied the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Derek Holmes and a run-scoring single by Nic Beers. With a sense of intensity in the air in the loser-eliminated format over the final three innings, Northern Valley took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth off Becahi reliever Jaden Weida.Ryan King worked a leadoff walk and Eitner followed with a grounder to short. But Becahi first baseman Caden Giordano dropped the throw. Beers then walked to load the bases with one out.Jack Tuner gave the Chargers the lead with a sacrifice fly to right before Eric Nothstein drilled an RBI single up the middle for a two-run advantage.Nothstein, who recently has been one of the team's hottest hitters, credited his recent success to assistant coach Joe Seremula."Coach Seremula made some changes to my swing and it has worked," said Nothstein, who dropped in the lineup from fifth to seventh. "I think dropping in the lineup also helped."They (Becahi) knocked us out of the (league) playoffs and it was nice to beat them."Klein is optimistic that his team can have another offensive eruption, similar to the 12-run, 12-hit eruption against Nazareth in the second round of the league playoffs. The Chargers only had six hits against Becahi."I'm still waiting for us to hit since the Nazareth game," said Klein. "We have been averaging five or six hits a game since then. It may not be what we want, but we are getting the job done."We went out and played the game. Eric (Nothstein) had a big hit and he is hitting better than he was in the fifth spot. I couldn't be prouder of these kids and we had another great team effort.""I didn't know any of them when the season started, but we all really grew close," said Nothstein. "We have built a great chemistry. Now, we have to keep this going."NEW HEIGHTS ... The Chargers became the third Northern Valley team in 17 years to win at least two games in the tournament. NV beat the top Lehigh Valley seed (Becahi) and No. 2 seed (Northampton).GETTING ON BASE ... The two teams combined for 11 walks (Northern Valley had seven) and 12 hits (six apiece).PLAY OF THE GAME ...
