Man charged with stealing cigarettes twice in one day

State police charged a man for two robberies of the Penn Forest Plaza Shell station on Wednesday.

The gas station on Route 903 was the target of two tobacco product heists, committed less than seven hours apart on late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning."We got hit last night at around 10:50, and again this morning at 5:03," store manager Tiffany Day said Wednesday.Police said Joshua Ackerman, 20, of Palmerton shattered one of the front doors with a rock nearly an hour after closing during the first incident, jumped over the front counter, and stole approximately $2,000 in cigarettes. He then fled through the broken door, and ran to the rear of the store and into a wooded area toward Church Road.Troopers Matthew Borger and Ryan Kempinski responded to the burglar alarm and evaluated security footage.Police described the suspect from the robberies as a man in his early 20s, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a small build, wearing a gray hoodie with the hood up, blue jeans, black slip-on shoes, and a gray backpack.Just after 5 a.m., police at the Lehighton barracks were made aware of another alarm from the Shell station, and Troopers Borger and Kempinski responded again. Surveillance video showed what appeared to be the same suspect breaking the other front door and proceeding to steal another $2,000 in tobacco products. The store owner estimated the damage to the doors at about $2,000 each.In the police affidavit, Trooper Charles Inserra said that it appeared that the same suspect committed both burglaries.Troopers Inserra and Michael Sofranko arrived at Ackerman's Penn Forest residence in the late morning on Wednesday to conduct a follow-up interview. When asked what he had been doing the previous evening, Ackerman said, "doing something not smart at the Shell gas station," according to the police affidavit.Ackerman admitted that he threw a rock through the door of the business and stole tobacco products. He also provided the troopers with the stolen tobacco products, as well as the shoes that he was wearing during the incidents.Ackerman is being charged with criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property, and criminal mischief. He is currently being held on a $50,000 bail, 10 percent. While the Shell station has been subject to robberies in the past, it has been at least a few years since the last incident, according to Day. For now, the focus is to get the business back into good shape."We're getting the doors repaired, cleaning everything back up, and keeping the business running," Day said.
