Walnutport carnival opens to the public tonight

The heavy storm clouds that rolled in Thursday night left the Walnutport Playground Association scrambling to reorganize the 43rd annual Carnival's activities for the weekend.

Thursday night's events were limited, leaving only the basket raffle and food stand for a limited amount of hours. A performance by The Large Flower Heads was also canceled.Weather is something the co-organizers Bob Treskot and daughter, Gale Husack, have had to contended with in past carnival years as well.In previous years, rides had been closed and bands canceled last minute. In 2015, Social Call was rained out midweek prompting the association to bring the group back in 2016.In anticipation of stormy skies, the fireworks were moved to Saturday, the same night as the wristband special, where all rides can be enjoyed for the cost of one $15 band.Weather permitting, Friday's fun will continue on with the exception of a sky-show with Country Rhythm for the evening's entertainment."If the weather holds up we will be selling food, having the basket raffle. The band is still on," he said. The carnival will run both nights from 6 to 9 p.m., the weeklong raffle winner will be pulled after 8 p.m. The association will have an additional kayak raffle along with the traditional table. For the raffle this year the community came to gather to donate multiple prizes."This year with all the gift cards and everything donated we had over 90 baskets," said Treskot.Leon's French Fries will be present at the carnival along with the association's own food stand. The Hydraulic Lime Band and fireworks will close out the carnival at 10:30 p.m.For Treskot, this will be the 31st year he has worked to conduct the carnival.Funds raised from theevent will be used for the upkeep and maintenance on the baseball field."This event is what the playground uses to pay for the lights and fees," he said. The carnival will reopen at 6 p.m. Friday.

Rides and entertainment will roll as scheduled Friday and Saturday night. Fireworks are also scheduled for 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. KELLEY ANDRADE/TIMES NEWS
