Slatington Council deals with surveillance, air conditioning

Robert Stettner of the Veteran's Memorial Committee stopped by Slatington's borough meeting to request two surveillance camera signs for the new memorial near St. John's.

"The cameras are already there," he said."The system is up and running."Stettner, also representing the Vigilant Fire Company, asked for the borough's permission to remove shrubs in front of the building to replant grass."It's unruly and out of hand. A lot of trash gets caught in them," he said. The board agreed to the landscape work. The borough has been awarded $82,000 in a Community Development Block Grant for funding to the Fourth Street reconstruction project. A block grant will be used for East Church Street improvements in the amount of $13,491. An additional $11,013 in labor and material costs has been added to the John Freed Way repair costs.A dining room air-conditioner broke down at the Vigilant Fire Company social club."They had to cancel a bingo game," said councilman Jon Rinker."Why isn't it fixed yet," asked fellow councilman Joe Wechsler during the borough council's Monday night meeting.According to councilman Bryon Reed, Kromer Plumbing, Heating and Air of Walnutport is ordering a fan part to complete the repair."This has been going on a week already and it's not getting done," said Wechsler."We met with Kromer," said borough manager Judith Danko."He said he put a rush order on a factory fan," she said.Danko told council she would put calls out to other repair companies. "We're in a line because we're not customers," she said."These people do a lot for the borough and they are our tenants. It's unacceptable that they are over there without air conditioners. It's not acceptable in this day and age," Wechsler said.CommunicationRinker, chairman of public safety committee, changed the topic to communication among the board."For the past couple months everybody has been bypassing me. No one is telling me what's going on, I didn't know about the police cruiser, the Vigilant. If I hadn't heard it from people on the streets I wouldn't have known the aerial truck was in an accident on Cherry Hill," he said."I want to be kept informed as chairman of public safety committee."Danko proposed a board meeting to discuss the duties of borough manager."Your frustration is understandable," she said.Weschler encouraged the board to move on to the next agenda item saying, "I don't want to meet. We've been over it, It doesn't go anywhere."First FridayAlice Wanamaker of the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce and representative for the Main Street Merchants Group, updated the board on the growing monthly First Friday event held last weekend."As this promotion continues to grow we see continued participation from businesses and residents," she said."Currently, 11 businesses are participating, up from six when we hosted our first event. We would like to thank council for supporting these events and the police force for their active foot patrol through the evening," she said. The next First Friday event will be hosted from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 4.The committee was recently awarded a grant from the Rotary Club of Slatington for the purchase of solar lights for the trees along Main Street."The lights have been placed on the trees in the 600 block and will continue to be hung as volunteers are available," she said.Rinker asked why the lights are not in the trees."The cord is not long enough. The trees won't support the solar mechanism," Wanamaker said."Other towns have them up in the leaves. The Rotary donated them and now they're going to be ruined by vandals and dogs urinating on them," he said."I appreciate that, but we are volunteers, not professionals. I invite you to come and help," she said.
