East Penn discusses social hall sale

The future of East Penn Social Hall remains in question, but it may get clearer after township supervisors voted Monday night to put out a request for proposals for sale or lease of the building.

According to East Penn Chairman William Schwab, the request is for real estate agents to tell the township how they would market the building for sale."If we're not going to do anything with it, why not put out a request for a proposal to sell it," Schwab said.Earlier this year, Christine Carl, of the W2A Design Group, presented highlights of a building feasibility study during a town hall meeting, focusing on suggested accessibility, electrical and plumbing improvements.Checking off every item in the study could cost the township between $418,000 and $602,000, Carl said at the time."How can we keep asking the taxpayers to put money into a building that doesn't make money," said Supervisor John Strockoz. "I've been here for six years and it never made any money."The financial burden of the building isn't because it doesn't have potential, said resident Loretta Smith."It's not being used right," she said. "Go back to the time when it was used and it was successful. How many years has it been since it was used right?"The door remains open, however, for someone to make a pitch to lease the building and operate it.According to supervisors, if someone is willing to pay for electric, pay for propane, etc., it would be willing to entertain a lease situation.
