Tamaqua errors costly in loss to Kutztown

The team that makes fewer mistakes normally has the advantage.

Unfortunately for Tamaqua on Tuesday, they made a ton of them.Tamaqua had three hiccups in the top of the first inning, and Kutztown was able to post four early runs on the board.Seven Tamaqua errors later, and Kutztown eventually doubled up on Tamaqua in a Schuylkill-Berks legion game, 14-7."It was one of those games," said Tamaqua coach Todd Heisler. "There was just nothing we could do today; it was that kind of day.(Monday) I think we might have had two errors and we played really good ball. We played a good Pine Grove team. But that's baseball. It just wasn't our night. The baseball gods weren't with us."Tamaqua scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 8-7 at that point.Mike Minchhoff led off with a single and Josh Inama was plunked to start the inning. Isaiah Kupchinsky then laid down a bunt, which would plate both runners after Kutztown threw the ball around and committed both of their errors on the play."It was sloppy on both sides all the way through it," said Kutztown coach Rodney Mease. "We're only playing with nine guys right now with a bunch of kids on vacation and stuff like that. Not having the kids in your program is the main killer. It limits what you could do. I had five kids playing positions they probably never played in their life."But Mease's club posted six runs over the final two frames to put the game away. The final four hitters in the Kutztown lineup combined to drive in 10 of the team's runs. Zach Schell had four RBIs, Jake Kimpland had three, and Nate Hayduk drove in two."Put the ball in play," Mease said. "That's what it's all about. Make them make a play and see what happens."Casey Rother led Tamaqua with a pair of hits and an RBI. Minchhoff scored twice, while Kupchinsky and Inama each scored a run and drew a walk.PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS! … The Schuylkill-Berks playoffs are set to begin Friday. However, Tamaqua (4-8) might have a scheduled game with Wyomissing on Wednesday. Both teams aimed to keep pitch counts low. "It's the same team that I had last year and we played fairly well," the Kutztown coach said. "I wanted to try and stay around .500. We're going to finish 6-7. We weren't hitting very well today. But we wanted to put the ball in play and maybe give them a chance to make some errors."FUN IN THE SUN … The sun was brutal, bright, and directly over the pitcher's mound. Players, coaches, and umpires had a difficult time at the plate. "Nothing you can really do about that," Mease said. "You gotta play ball. The sun was nasty there the last inning, I'm surprised we put the ball in play as well as we did."Kutztown 400 314 2 - 14 10 2Tamaqua 101 230 0 - 7 5 10Leverington, Hayduk (5) and Hayduck, Tucker (5); Minchoff, Evans (4), Akins (5), Gazdick (6).
