W. Penn may use grants for sewers

A West Penn Township official would like to use a portion of this year's Community Development Block Grant funding to correct malfunctioning sewer systems.

Supervisor Tony Prudenti recently said that he would like to see the township use some of its grant funds for that purpose. That came following a grant hearing conducted by Schuylkill County administrator Gary Bender, who said the township is expected to receive $86,544 in grant funds.Of that, he said 18 percent has to come out for administrative fees.Prudenti said that the township recently submitted its Act 537 Plan to the state Department of Environmental Protection. He said that he would like to see the township use "some of this money to get these (malfunctioning sewer systems) fixed."Bender said that would be an eligible project under housing rehabilitation, though people would have to meet the income requirements of the program. He then applauded the board for their prior utilization of grant funds."I think it's a great idea; they've done some ADA work at their park," Bender said. "I think working it now for the malfunctioning systems is a good use of these funds."Other actionSupervisors also:• Agreed to grant the Hower minor subdivision plan a 90-day extension.• Tabled the Heller Gas subdivision.• Announced that the Act 172 (tax credits for volunteer first responders) will be continued until the board's Oct. 2 meeting.
