Tamaqua Council addresses signs at Depot Square

Tamaqua Borough Council has taken steps to prohibit the posting of any kind of unauthorized, temporary sign around Depot Square Park.

The request was made by Councilman Micah Gursky. "I see people taking prom and wedding photos there, and they don't want to have a garage sale sign in their wedding photo," he said."If we allow one sign there, we have to allow them all, and we have plenty of other spaces in the borough to put signs," he said.Council approved Gursky's recommendation, and said that for a sign to be placed in the area, council's approval would need to be obtained before posting the sign, and any sign that did not have approval would be removed."We want this to be a sign-free zone," Gursky said.In other sign-related business, Council approved certificates of appropriateness for signage at 30 W. Broad St. for Country Crafts and Treasures, and at 44 W. Broad St. for Daniel Reigel's Plumbing and Heating business. They also approved a certificate of appropriateness for window replacement at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 Mauch Chunk St., provided that all windows remain the same design.Council recognized members of the 2017 Tamaqua Area High School varsity baseball team who were the District XI Class AAA champions and Brad Clemson, a Tamaqua Area High School student who was the District XI Class AA boys 800-meter champion at the track and field district meet. All students and coaches were presented with certificates for their accomplishments.A request from Tara Goho, to hold the annual Girl Scout Day Camp at the Bungalow park and pool from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 19 was approved. Council approved a request from Christopher Osenbach, a Scout with Troop 755, to complete his Eagle Scout project at the Owl Creek Reservoir. Osenbach plans to clear a new hiking and bike path in the area of the reservoir.Council approved Steve Naylor's transfer from the street department to the water treatment plant, pending the completion of his 30-day trial period, which will be up later this month. They also approved the transfer of Richard Miller from within the street department to the street worker/street sweeper position vacated by Naylor. Miller will also have a 30-day trial period before being made permanent in the position. Two additional employees for the Bungalow pool were approved, including Dawn Clouser as a clerk, and Kiera Van Horn as a lifeguard. Although the clerk positions were filled at last month's meeting, it was noted that one candidate had declined the position.
