Bulldogs advance to finals

OREFIELD - For Kaitlin Hoffman, the first and seventh innings of Northern Lehigh's 6-5 win over Salisbury in the District 11 semifinals, ran the full gamut of emotions.

The junior pitcher allowed an unearned run in the top of the first and then led off the bottom of the inning with a double for what she came to find out was the 100th hit of her career. As her teammates rushed the field with a banner, Hoffman had a hard time believing the celebration was for her."It feels so surreal," said Hoffman. "I honestly didn't know that I was close to my 100th hit, and when they stopped the game for me, it felt incredible."I had no idea what was going on, I definitely didn't think it was for me."Hoffman nearly hit another emotional high in the seventh inning, when she slid into the plate for what would have been the winning run. Instead, Salisbury center fielder Peyton Stauffer threw a strike to catcher Lilia Crouthamel, who put the tag on Hoffman for the first out of the inning. One out later, Lauren Hoffman singled to put runners on first and second, and Katie Yesik singled to almost the same place that Stauffer made the throw from to get Hoffman. But this time, the throw went a little up the third base line, allowing Tiffany Yesik to score the winning run.The two teams battled back-and-forth over the first three innings, with Northern Lehigh scoring twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead, and then added another run in the bottom of the second.Salisbury struck for three runs in the third and held a 4-3 lead, until the bottom of the inning when the Bulldogs scored twice.Salisbury tied the game in the top of the seventh, setting up Northern Lehigh's heroics. The win sends Northern Lehigh into the District 11 3A championship game against Pine Grove on Tuesday.HUSTLE AWARD ... Kaitlin Hoffman led off the seventh inning with what looked to be a single to left, but when the left fielder didn't hustle to field the ball, Hoffman wasted no time in going to second to turn it into a leadoff double. "She's a very good athlete, you could put her at any position and she could play. She's a great hitter and a great athlete. She has a great wherewithal when she's playing this game, she knows what to do on the field," said Bob Hicks of Hoffman's abilities.WHO KNEW? ... Hicks looked into how many hits Hoffman had only because another player reached the 100-hit plateau and it got him to thinking about how many Hoffman had. If not for that, the moment might have gone unnoticed.EVEN IT UP ... This was the fourth meeting of the two teams this season and they split the four games.
