Schuylkill Twp. issues scam alert

Schuylkill Township Police are warning the public about a scam that has victimized two township residents in recent weeks.

Residents are receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be from the company "Support Buddy." The company reportedly is a technology company offering computer support through the Internet. There have been numerous reports that the company is a scam.In some cases, they call and offer to make your computer run faster and smoother, as well as rid your device of malware and viruses. All you have to do is give them computer passwords. This allows them to access your banking information. In other cases, victims are using their computers and a warning box pops up, saying a threat has been discovered, offering various package deals to unlock your computer. In one of the township cases, the victim was told they were owed money and the company would be sending a check. She was directed to cash the check, which was made out for more than she was owed. She was told to purchase iTunes cards with the excess funds, then send those cards to the company. That way, the "company" receives the gift cards before the victim learns the check was bogus.Sgt. Anthony Stanell cautions the public to never give out your personal information over the phone or Internet, unless you have initiated the transaction. Also, if you do receive suspicious offers, contact your local police.
