Voters pick candidates in Schuylkill races

Schuylkill County voters in the Tamaqua area selected candidates for various borough councils, township supervisors and tax collectors on Tuesday.

The picking was very light as there were very few challenges for the nominations of the major parties and the total county turnout of voters support that notion as only about 21 percent of eligible voters turned out Tuesday.Here are the results of local races.TamaquaThere are three seats, four-year terms, open on the borough council with four candidates seeking the Republican nomination on Tuesday.The top four voter getters were Ritchie A. Linkhorst, who had 350 votes, followed by David E. Mace with 332 and Michael E. Morgans with 320. Finishing out of the race was Kerry Lasky with 264 tallies.On the Democratic side, James E. Hull was the lone candidate and got 159 votes. There were 33 write-ins. A person needs at least 10 write-in votes to get a nomination.Incumbent tax collector Pamela J. McCullion was unopposed and got 529 votes. There was no Democratic candidate but there were 39 write-in votes.Mahanoy CityIn Mahanoy City there was a race for three openings on borough council, four-year terms, with four Democrats seeking their party's nod and no Republicans filing. The top three vote-getters were Thomas C. McCabe with 212; Scott Kline, 179; and Thom Maziekas, 164. Odd man out was Louis Huber with 128. There were 66 write-in votes on the GOP side.There is also a two-year seat on count with Patricia Mullins getting 225 Democratic votes with no GOP candidate, but 25 write-ins were cast.For mayor both parties had candidates and they will meet in the fall. Incumbent Democrat Patricia Schnitzius got 207 votes and Republican Dennis Wiessner 147.For tax collector Democrat Teckla A. McCabe got 244 votes and was unopposed with no Republican filing but there were 12 write-ins.Schuylkill TownshipIn Schuylkill Township there was a race for the GOP nod for six-year term supervisor. Charles A. Hosler defeated Anthony J. Zawada, 83-44. There was no Democratic candidate but there was 27 write-in votes.For tax collector Republican Paul Delpais got 118 unopposed votes with no Democratic candidate and not enough write-in votes.Blythe TownshipIn Blythe Township there was a race for the Democratic nod for six-year term for supervisor. Chris Wallace defeated Albert J. Lubinsky, 85 to 77. There was no GOP candidate but there were 98 write-ins.For tax collection the lone candidate, Democrat Joan M. Dranginis got 147 unopposed vote with no GOP candidate and not enough write-ins.
