Weatherly considers police for Lehigh

Weatherly Borough Council is mulling a request to extend police coverage to a nearby township.

The council recently received a letter from the Lehigh Township Board of supervisors asking if the borough's department would consider patrolling in the township.Lehigh Township is located immediately east and southeast of the borough. It has only 479 residents, according to the most recent census, while Weatherly has about 2,500.Weatherly has never provided police coverage for another municipality. But Mayor and Council President Tom Connors said that he is open to at least having a discussion with Lehigh Township."I'm always willing to sit down and discuss anything with anybody," he said. "If it benefits the residents of Weatherly, that's what matters."Other council members were open to holding the meeting. Cecilia Gower, who is leaving council at the end of the year, said she thinks it would affect the coverage in the borough. We'd have to employ a lot more people, I think," she said.Resident Jeff Miller said he doesn't want the borough giving away coverage for free.Councilman George Miller said that with Harrisburg considering charging municipalities that don't have their own local police, there could be more townships asking for coverage in the future.Connors said that many of the regional police efforts he has heard about have failed, but he was still open to inviting the supervisors to council's next workshop meeting. That is scheduled for June 14 at 7 p.m. at Borough Hall."There are a lot of issues involved. but being a good neighbor, not to listen, I almost think it would be rude," Connors said.Connors also announced that he is planning a borough yard sale at the former Tung-Sol property on May 27 and 28.All money raised from the sale will go toward purchasing picnic tables for the Weatherly Hillclimb.Members of the public are invited to drop off items the day of the sale. Connors said that no old televisions will be accepted.
