McElhenney achieves Eagle Scout rank with palm

Brock McElhenney of Macungie was recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor Oct. 30, 2016, at the Lower Macungie Community Center, Macungie.

McElhenney is a member of Boy Scout Troop 131 chartered at Bethany United Methodist Church, Wescosville.McElhenney completed 41 merit badges in a variety of subjects en route to the Eagle Scout rank.For his Eagle service project, he assembled 150 welcome kits for the Allentown Rescue Mission, Hamilton Street, Allentown.These kits included personal care items for the clients that included soap, shampoo, shaving cream, razors, deodorant, T-shirts, briefs, socks, shower shoes and digital watches.For his primary fundraising project, he held an "old-fashioned hot dog roast" in the parking lot of Bethany United Methodist Church.Local businesses including Berks Meats, Reading, Pepsi Bottling Co., Allentown, Chick fil-A, Allentown, and Aldi's distribution center, Center Valley, donated items to assure a successful event.Baked goods were also provided by families of the troop.Both the T-shirts and socks were purchased with funds from a grant provided from Teen Works of the Lehigh Valley.This grant was earmarked for U.S.-made, Union-made products. The shirts were purchased from Windjammer Co., Bangor, and socks from Wigwam, Sheboygan, Wisconsin.Jack McElhenney, troop member and younger brother, served as master of ceremonies and also delivered the invocation.Jerry Williams, former Scoutmaster of Troop 131 convened the Court of Honor.The ceremonial Scout Oath and Law reading, along with the candle lighting was performed by Senior Patrol Leader Anthony Howorth and troop member Connor DeJohn.Troop Committee Chairman Greg O'Neill confirmed the qualifications of the candidate.Steve Howorth, Scoutmaster and 16th recipient of the Eagle Scout rank for Troop 131, administered the Eagle Scout Charge and Pledge.McElhenney received his Eagle award from his mother, and the National Eagle Certificate from his father.In return, both parents received the Eagle mother and father pins from their son.McElhenney thanked those who helped and guided him through almost 12 years of scouting.He specifically thanked Jerry and Cindy Williams for being the best Cub Scout leaders possible. He also praised the Scoutmasters and merit badge counselors of Troop 131, along with his parents for their love and guidance as well as friends and other family members who had influence on his life.In a separate ceremony McElhenney received a Bronze Palm for exceeding the required 21 merit badges required for the rank of Eagle Scout.A senior at Emmaus High School, he participates in the marching band, chorale, orchestra, concert band, Tri M, concert choir, and the a cappella group, Fermata Nowhere.He will be attending Lebanon Valley College in the fall, majoring in audio and music production.He is the son of Jim McElhenney of Jim Thorpe and Monica James of Macungie.His grandparents are Jim and Betty Ann McElhenney of Jim Thorpe and Larry and Joan Butz of Macungie.
