Carbon County court - DUI

An Andreas man was sentenced to a prison term for drunken driving and a drug count on Friday in Carbon County court.

He was one of eight defendants in driving under the influence cases who were sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass after previously pleading to the charges.Lehighton incidentJarred Michael Muffley, 23, was arrested on Sept. 11along East Street by Lehighton police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. He was also found with illegal substances and pleaded to a count of possession of a controlled substance.Muffley admitted to drug issues and spent 28 days in an inpatient rehabilitation facility.He is currently in the county prison in Nesquehoning serving a probation violation sentence which runs to June 22.On the DUI charge Serfass sentenced him to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service. He was given three days credit and paroled.On the drug count he was sentenced to serve one to 12 months in prison consecutive to the DUI charge. He was given credit for 34 days spent in rehab and prison on the charge and paroled. He must also render another 50 hours of community service.Other casesJeffrey Camy Luc, 33, of Pittsburgh, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, a one year license suspension and must render 25 hours of community service. He was given credit for 11 days spent in jail on the charge and paroled.He arrested on March 1, 2016, along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Jonathan H. Burak, 41, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service. On a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, he was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the DUI charge, and another 50 hours of community service for a total of 75 hours. He was given credit for 18 days spent in jail on the charges and paroled.He was arrested on Jan. 9 along Route 209 in Mahoning Township by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.John M. Schaeffer, 45, of Palmerton, was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 he must and render 25 hours of community service for a first offense.He was arrested on Oct. 9, 2016, along Delaware Avenue by Palmerton police. A test revealed a 0.10 BAC.Corey Regan Schlier Jr., 29, of Lansford, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and he must render 25 hours of community service.He arrested on March 3, 2015, along Seventh Street in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.He will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. May 5.Christopher Allen Evans, 33, of Orwigsburg, was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail followed by 59 months in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program with the first 60 days on electronic monitoring. He must pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and must render 100 hours of community service.He was given credit for 30 days spent in an inpatient rehab program and paroled. The IPP will be transferred to Schuylkill County.He was arrested on Aug. 13, 2016, along West Broadway in Jim Thorpe by state police at Lehighton while operating a motorcycle erratically. A test revealed a 0.20 BAC.Ryan J. Thorik, 50, of Jim Thorpe, was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.He was arrested on July 3, 2014, along Mauch Chunk Street by Mahoning Township police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. He was previously placed in the ARD program as a first-time offender but was revoked for violating conditions.Laura Mae Redner, 33, of Tamaqua, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and must render 25 hours of community service. On a driving under suspension charge (non-DUI related) she was fined $1,000.She arrested on Jan. 28, 2016, along Bridge Street by Lehighton police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.She is currently an inmate in the state correctional institution at Muncy, Lycoming County, serving a one- to two-year term imposed in Schuylkill County. Serfass ruled his sentence run concurrent with Schuylkill County.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole and must follow any recommendations of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
