Lehighton students spread kindness

It's been a year of adapting to change at Lehighton Area Middle School. Crews are putting the wraps on a multimillion-dollar renovation project that forced many classes out of their normal rooms on a rotating basis. Temporary classrooms were set up in the auditorium and the building layout substantially changed.

Through all the dust and noise, however, burst a wave of positivity Friday.Led by Lehighton middle school family and consumer sciences teacher Marianne Slaby, the Family Career and Community Leaders of America club made hundreds of colored paper flower blossoms to hang around the school."We have realized with the construction in the building and everything being different this year," Slaby said, "that we all needed a burst of kindness, and we wanted to pass that along in a fun, unexpected way."The spread kindness message is certainly something of need in our world lately."Each blossom featured a positive quote to hopefully inspire students throughout the day."There are too many stories of kids being bullied or kids feeling down, and we just want to turn things around, even if it's just for a day," Isabella Miklus and Elizabeth Rex, Lehighton seventh-grade students, said. "The messages say things like you're beautiful and stay strong."It's all about making a positive difference in someone's day."Staff and club members stayed after school Thursday to hang the blossoms so they were ready for student arrival on Friday."Our intent is when staff and students arrive Friday morning, the school would be covered with kind words of support and encouragement with bursts of color," Slaby said. "There is a big banner in the lobby saying 'Spread Kindness,' which will make everyone's day a little cheerier and brighter."The school also planned a "kindness" presentation for eighth-grade students on Friday.
