Tamaqua gets an update on softball field damage

Tamaqua Area School District's softball field won't be fully up to snuff until the summer.

The district had been awaiting repairs to its softball field that was damaged when poles fell on it in February. The poles fell on the district's softball field, backstop and dugouts.Superintendent Ray Kinder said the district was working with the insurance company and was waiting for three poles. Upon receipt of those, he said the district would work with an installer who would dig the holes and sink them into the ground.Kinder said netting would then be installed between the poles, and that the teams would not play baseball and softball games at that facility without the protective netting in place. On Tuesday, Kinder told the school board at its committee meeting that while the backstop made it impossible for the softball team to play, it was altered so that the team could get through the season.Kinder said the backstop and the netting will be resolved during the summer. In the meantime, he said the teams have been pretty resilient."Whenever you have an unexpected challenge occur, it is crucial to have the cooperation of the stakeholders involved," Kinder said. "Our teams have managed the changes well. Our coaches have adapted to the circumstances. Opposing schools have demonstrated a willingness to cooperate with scheduling."
