Tigers sweep Blue Bombers

With a wry smile and already knowing the answer, a young fan lobbed a softball question to Northwestern's Trevor Cunningham.

"Any seconds today?"Cunningham's response, much like his performance in Tuesday's Colonial League meet against Palmerton, was crisp."Nope."Cunningham ripped off four victories - in the 100 (11.6) and 200 (23.6) while also sweeping the 110 hurdles (15.5) and 300 hurdles (41.6) - to help the Tigers edge the Blue Bombers 78-72 in the boys meet."It's always a great day to win four events in a meet," said Cunningham. "Not many people get to do that, but it's a great thing to do. And that doesn't mean I can slack off, and not work hard. I'm still going to be pushing myself in practice, pushing my teammates and they'll be pushing me."And it's not only a personal sport; we're pushing to do well as a team, too."A 1-2 finish in the 3200 by Phillip Castrine (11:04.4) and Dominic Mertz (11:07.4) earned Northwestern eight valuable points in the meet's penultimate race to clinch the win."I'm proud of our kids," said Tigers' boys coach Tim Cunningham. "I knew it was going to be a close meet. Some things didn't pan out as we thought, as I thought, they were going to pan out. I knew it was getting close and coming down to the wire, and we were just hoping to get a break somewhere else. That's all we could hope for and hope our kids do their best."Jake Martinez picked up wins in the 800 (2:10.7) and 1600 (4:56.6) for Palmerton."Overall, it was a great race on both ends in the 1600 and the 800," said Martinez. "I had great competition from Northwestern pushing me along to get me some good times."In the girls meet, Northwestern posted a 101-49 victory.Madeline Consuelos and Molly Tarvin helped the Tigers control the middle distance and distance events. Consuelos won the 400 (1:06.0) and 800 (2:37.0) while Tarvin placed first in the 1600 (5:58.6) and 3200 (12:53.0).Consuelos and Tarvin also teamed with Alyssa Zack and Hannah Herzon to win the 3200 relay (11:04.9)."I'm at a good place," said Consuelos. "I'm definitely, you can tell that I'm not gonna peak the next meet. You can tell that my times are gonna get faster and faster."It's not like I'm blowing the competition away by 30 seconds right now. I'm in the top mix, and that's where I want to be. I don't want to peak the first two meets"I want to peak the last two, which is leagues and districts to get to states. That's when I want to peak."Senior Trisha Billig and sophomore Madison Martinez had big days for the Blue Bombers.Billig, who won the 100 (13.7) and long jump (15-8), enjoys the competition that comes with each meet, something that has helped her confidence grow throughout the early portion of the season."It helps me a lot," said Billig. "I know that if they are really close to me, like a tenth of a second or whatever, I know that that's when I get the confidence, and I'm like, 'I can beat them.'"Martinez swept the 100 hurdles (17.7) and 300 hurdles (51.6)."I'm really happy with where I'm at this season, better than where I was at last season," said Martinez. "I feel like I've really improved throughout the offseason, so I'm really happy."Martinez and Billig teamed with Destiny Mokshefski and Sayler Burke to win the 400 relay with a time of 55.1.HONORED...
