Man beaten, shots fired, fugitive found

Tamaqua police dealt with their own series of twisted events Tuesday morning, events that landed one man in the Schuylkill County Prison and earned criminal charges for two other people.

It began shortly after 2 a.m. when Brew Street residents called police to report a suspicious man banging on their door.In the meantime that “suspicious” man called the Schuylkill County Communications Center to report that someone was shooting at him and he was now on Schuylkill Avenue in the area under construction. On scene, officers identified the man as Dennis Harner of South Carolina, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs.Harner said he had been assaulted on Rowe Street, by someone named “Ronnie,” when he refused to fight with a man by the name of “Tony.” He fled that area, running all over the North Ward, sure he was being chased by two men with guns. He made his way to Schuylkill Avenue, convinced the men chasing him had fired several shots at him. One of his pursuers was described as a man wearing a dark coat and a red flannel shirt.Shots firedThat’s when shots did ring out, with officers pinpointing the location as the area of Elm and Pine streets. They began searching around the Elm Street Bridge, including an apartment near the Pine Street Pub. Two spent .40-caliber shell casings were eventually found in the area. The next twist was finding a man hiding in the wooded area behind the apartment. He was identified as Cody Deetz, 21, of Tamaqua. In addition to Deetz, officers also found two sandwich bags filled with suspected methamphetamine, two needles, two empty baggies and a cotton swab.Deetz was wanted on an outstanding warrant, earning him a trip to the county jail and additional charges of possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Then came another twist. As officers were dealing with Deetz, they observed a couple walking north on Schuylkill Avenue.Owner of the gunThe man fit the description provided by Harner and happened to have an empty gun holster on his waistband. He was identified as Ryan Michael Daniels, 35, of 401 Pine St., Tamaqua. The woman was identified as Laura Beth Peters, 26, also of 401 Pine St.When told that police were investigating shots being fired, Peters said the couple left the Pine Street Pub after closing and drove to Turkey Hill for cigarettes. She said she knew nothing about any shots being fired and admitted having a handgun in her car. She provided the 9 mm Taurus to police. When Daniels was questioned, he said the couple had walked to Turkey Hill. When told about Harner claiming someone shot at him, Daniels freely offered up the information that before going to Turkey Hill, he had taken his .40-caliber H&K pistol and fired three shots into the air to celebrate his team winning a pool match. He said it was something routinely done in New Jersey when he lived there. When asked where the H&K was, Peters admitted she gave it to a friend for safekeeping after learning what police were investigating. She was charged with tampering with evidence. The handgun was turned over to police by the friend.Daniels faces charges of reckless endangerment, public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and discharging a firearm within borough limits.Had Harner not thought someone was shooting at him, Deetz would still be on the lam and it would have been next to impossible to learn who fired the shots heard by the officers.

A former New Jersey man fired three shots from the Elm Street Bridge in Tamaqua early Tuesday morning. Ryan M. Daniels, 35, who now lives in Tamaqua, said shooting into the air to celebrate is acceptable in the Garden State. He was cited by Tamaqua Police. KATHY KUNKEL/TIMES NEWS
