Wreckers defeat JT

Chip away and don't swing for the fence.

That theory seemed to work for Weatherly during a non-league contest with Jim Thorpe on Monday. The Wreckers clung to a 6-5 advantage headed into the sixth frame. Then, Weatherly strung together eight singles - six of which drove in runs. That outburst ended up being enough to fend off the Olympians for a 12-9 non-league victory."I told them contact, contact, contact," said Weatherly head coach Will Bartel. "It's what we preach all the time in the cage. When you put the ball in play, parts are moving. And when parts are moving, there's a chance for mistakes. When you get a couple of hits, it all works out and pays off."Sam Knepper got the party started in the top of the sixth with a leadoff base knock for the Wreckers. With one out, Sam Kane added another single and Hailey Weaver reached on an error. Jackie Henny, Molly Isom, Katie Graham, and Shannon Frye all followed with consecutive RBI singles. Finally, with two outs, Knepper came back up to add in another RBI single and Morgan Gower finished the hit-parade with the Wreckers' eighth hit of the inning, stretching the lead to 12-5."They believe," Bartel said. "Since I've come in, I've talked about positivity. We're a small school and we don't have any margin for error or negativity or anything. I've told them to believe in themselves and that they can compete with anybody."Weatherly needed every bit of that offensive explosion in the top of the inning as Thorpe came up in the bottom of the frame and tried to gain back some momentum with four runs of its own. With the bases juiced, Leah Detweiler hit a casual fly-ball that was dropped by a Weatherly outfielder and two runs crossed the plate. Caitlyn Holt came up later in the inning and drove in a pair, which made the score 12-9."I don't think we were patient enough in the beginning of the game," said Jim Thorpe head coach Lori Lienhard. "Toward the end of the game, we were more patient, but it wasn't soon enough."Brittney Marzen led off with a single and immediately stole second to try and spark one more Olympians' rally in the bottom of the seventh. But Kane, who had an adventurous afternoon on the mound, locked in, recorded back-to-back strikeouts, and got the final Thorpe batter to pop-up to end the game."They battled back. Jim Thorpe is a good team," said Bartel. "It feels good to get that first win under our belt. Everybody played well and we all pulled together. That's the way it has to be."COMPLETE GAMES ... Both Kane and her JT counterpart Maggie Holloway pitched from start to finish. Kane struck out seven, walked four, and hit five batters, while Holloway walked two and struck out nine. "She battled and threw strikes," said Bartel of Kane. "She plunked a couple of people, but she finished real strong and had a great day on the mound."SEASONED PLAYERS ... Jim Thorpe eight seniors, all of which start. Marzen led the Olympians with two hits and three RBIs. "We have a lot of experienced players and a couple of young players coming up," said Lienhard. "This team stays positive, even when we are down. They always support each other and they don't get down on themselves as quick as they used to. I think that's a plus."Weatherly 321 006 0 - 12 17 6Jim Thorpe 140 004 0 - 9 8 5Kane and Frye; Holloway and Marzen. W - Kane. L - Marzen.
