Carbon County court - guilty pleas

State police at Fern Ridge regularly patrol Interstate 80 in Carbon County, and those patrols have resulted in numerous arrests.

On Friday in the county court, eight people stopped by troopers, or who were passengers in vehicles stopped by troopers, entered guilty pleas to various charges, six to drug counts.Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted pleas from the following:Daniel J. Salcie, 32, of Hazleton, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance - marijuana. He was stopped on April 27in Kidder Township for speeding, 74 mph in a 65 zone. A search of the vehicle resulted in two large bags of marijuana found in the trunk.Matika placed him on probation for two years and ordered him to supply a DNA sample, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, and render 100 hours of community service.Joseph R. Logan Jr., 29, of DuBois, Clearfield County, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance - methamphetamine.He was stopped on Feb. 6, 2016, in Kidder Township for an equipment violation. A bag of the drug was found in the vehicle.Matika deferred sentencing. Logan is currently an inmate at the state correctional institution at Camp Hill, Dauphin County.Maurice Mark Highley, 36, of Irvington, New Jersey, pleaded to one count each of possession of a controlled substance - heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.He was stopped on Jan. 6 in East Side Borough for a traffic violation. Found in the vehicle were 14 bricks of heroin.Matika sentenced him to serve six to 12 months in a state correctional institution on both counts, with the terms running consecutively. He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, and render 25 hours of community service when paroled.It was noted Highley is facing a state parole violation proceeding.Matthew Michael Greene, 22, of Sunbury, Northumberland County, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was stopped on Dec. 18in East Side Borough for speeding, 75 mph in a 65 zone. Various drug paraphernalia was found in the vehicle.He was placed on probation for six months and ordered to render 25 hours of community service.Douglas Christopher Smart, 28, of Williamsport, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was stopped on Aug. 30in Kidder Township. He was found with drug paraphernalia and cocaine. A drug possession count was dropped.He was placed on probation for a year, ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.Hopeton Lloyd Brevett, 40, of Mahanoy City, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was stopped on Sept. 25in East Side Borough after being observed driving erratically. He was found to be under the influence of a controlled substance.He was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. April 5.Tyree Anthony Burns, 22, of Philadelphia, pleaded to one count of firearms not to be carried without a license. He was a passenger in a vehicle stopped on April 14, 2015, in East Side Borough. At the stop he was found to have a .40-caliber pistol in his possession.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.Mariya Ann Fenton, 32, of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, pleaded to one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and false identification to law enforcement. She was a passenger in a vehicle stopped on Jan. 27 in Kidder Township. At the stop she gave a false name and found with empty baggies with drug residue on them.She was placed on probation for six months on each count, running concurrent.She is currently an inmate in the Lehigh County prison on a probation office petition and is facing extradition to New Jersey for violating parole.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
