Two-alarm Nesquehoning fire damages 4 homes

Fire crews from across Carbon and Schuylkill counties battled an early morning two-alarm blaze in Nesquehoning that damaged four homes on Tuesday.

A fire at 11 E. High St. was reported at 1:39 a.m. after the homeowner’s son found a fire in their garage.The three Nesquehoning fire departments and Nesquehoning Ambulance were dispatched for a working garage fire, but upon arrival, Fire Chief John McArdle found the fire had spread to the home as well.A second alarm went out and crews from Lansford, Summit Hill, Jim Thorpe and Lehighton fire departments, as well as Nesquehoning police and water authority, Tamaqua’s RIT team and rescue, Weatherly Ambulance, Mahoning Valley Ambulance and Lehighton Ambulance responded. Weatherly and Hometown fire departments were placed on standby at the Nesquehoning Fire Station.McArdle said that the fire damaged four residences at 1, 3, 5 and 11 E. High St.Two of the buildings were not occupied and all residents in 3 and 11 E. High St. made it out safely.“The fire was very challenging because of the adverse weather conditions,” McArdle said. At the time of the fire, the beginning of the winter storm was moving through the region, which made for additional problems.The fire was declared under control at 4:36 a.m. and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.The people displaced by the fire are currently staying with family members, and the American Red Cross is providing aid.Fire crews were dispatched to the residence again just after 8 a.m. Tuesday after several hot spots were discovered, McArdle said.
