Charges filed in two Monroe Co. fatal crashes

Police have filed charges in connection with two separate fatal crashes that occurred on Route 196 in Monroe County last summer.

Police filed charges in juvenile court this week against an unidentified 17-year-old from Saylorsburg. She was charged with DUI homicide by vehicle, relating to a June 20 crash on Route 196 in Coolbaugh Township.

21-year-old James H. Miles was killed in the crash.

Police said just prior to the crash, the 17-year-old had stopped in the middle of Route 196, then accelerated into the northbound lane, sideswiping another car before ultimately striking Miles' vehicle.

Police determined that the girl was under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the crash.

No further details were available.

Miles, 21, was a graduate of Pocono Mountain West and had played on the school's basketball team. He had been set to graduate this spring from Kutztown University with a bachelor's degree in social work.

Police also filed charges in a separate incident where a 26-year-old man allegedly struck a pedestrian while driving without a license.

Brian K. Jackson of Tobyhanna was accused of fatally striking a pedestrian who was walking along the northbound lane of Route 196 on the night of Aug. 3.

26-year-old Jeremy Owens died in the crash.

Jackson faces a felony charge for causing a fatal crash while unlicensed. Police determined that his driver's license was suspended at the time of the crash.

Jackson was released on $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for March 29.
